A bag of jutlibari tea

After much research on my part and exchange of emails with both Canada and France, of which the former would have loved to sell me some, and the latter could not, a relative finally acquired this bag of tea direct from Gillanders. They had previously visited the shop in Paris, but baulked at the price. So truly this tea is like gold dust!

Self Help Groups at Jutlibari

Found on the web site of the Government of Assam, Panchayat and Rural Development Department

This page links to Chandramukhi. Not all the links work, but one brings up a spreadsheet listing several others with bank account details, number of members and any activities. There is some duplication.

Description from the web site of Gillanders Arbuthnot & Co. Ltd. - Tea Division

Welcome to Gillanders Arbuthnot & Co. Ltd. - Tea Division: "Jutlibari Tea Estate
Tea DivisionThe Jutlibari tea estate has already earned international fame. It has not only bagged the coveted Tea Board awards several times but also the “Arch of Europe Gold Star” awards for excellence in quality at the international level. The estate can produce both CTC and Orthodox varieties of tea. The Orthodox variety is primarily exported to Germany.

Jutlibari is located just 8 Km. From Duliajan in Tingi Circle of Dibrugarh district in Assam. In order to further improve the quality of tea, older sections of the garden have been replaced with high yielding variety of clones. A meticulously planned water management project has kept the water logging level in the tea estate under control. The estate has a total grant area of 707.47 hectares and produces 1.07 million kgs of tea annually."

Leading the fight against alcoholism in Assam - India News

Leading the fight against alcoholism in Assam - India News

Very interesting story about 34 woman, Kamala Bawri, and how she is working to tackle alcoholism among the male workers at Jutlibari. Described as a messiah to the women, the number of brewing units on the estate has dropped from nearly a dozen to none in just a few months. The story also mentions that the estate has a hospital!

Great grandfather, family and workers at Jutlibari

If you were still wondering about why I have this blog, this is the reason and proof. My great grandfather Charles Ramage Blake, in the centre (affectionately known as Granddad Blake) opened up the land in Assam which became the Jutlibari Tea Garden. My great grandmother, a Khasis, is sitting to his right and my grandmother is sitting second from the right.

I love this picture, which has scanned so well, because it shows the Jutlibari tea sign.

Image of the garden

Now I confess that I cannot remember the web site from which I took this image. Very inefficient of me, especially considering I did two history degrees. Anyway I am sure this is the garden, otherwise I would not have saved the image. Even if I am wrong, and no one can prove this, it gives a good impression of what a tea estate is like.

First tea chest found on the internet

On one of my many internet searches I was so amazed to see this image download, that I exclaimed out loud. Just as well it was lunch time at work and the people in the office were interested to know the reason for my exclamation and to hear about the family history. This is a great image as jutlibari is clearly visible on this Hamburg chest.

Sale of tea chest on ebay

I occasionally search ebay (and have even bought something) generally looking for Paul Smith bargains, imagine my initial surprise and then annoyance when I found this on the site. Unfortunately the sale had ended. Probably just as well as otherwise I would have to have bought it - for what? And just where would I have stored the thing. Still I now have an alert on ebay, which I never read. Amazing to see though.

I was amazed to find the web site for this shop in Paris selling the tea. I just need to arrange a visit. I was hoping to surprise my father by getting some, but in the end I told him

About this blog

I have set up this blog as a place to store news and information relating to the Jutlibari Tea Company in Assam, North East India and for more general news relating to Assam and the tea industry in general.

I have been searching google and other engines for several years to see what information comes up about this company. It is amazing how over the years the number of sites has increased significantly, from simply retrieving references to my email (the first I ever had, which I use as my spam account, and which is probably still listed on a number of external web sites) to finding sites such as the tea stockists.

I have recently set up a google alert, and it is for this reason that I have decided to set up this site to store the more interesting results.
